To: San Luis Obispo Cultural Heritage Committee Re: November 18, 2024 Meeting: Item 4A: 1405 Garden Street (ARCH-0568-2024) Review Of A Mixed-Use Development In The Old Town Historic District From: Allan Cooper, AIA, Secretary Save Our Downtown Date: November 16, 2024 Honorable Chair and Committee Members - The proposed project at 1405 Garden Street could very easily be modified to take on the characteristics of 1329 Garden Street (see 1st photo) located only a half block away. One must admit that the side elevation of 1329 Garden Street leaves much to be desired. However, there is some merit in the architect’s (Jim Duffy) attempt to expand on the original building’s circa 1948 Streamline Moderne style. But there are discrepancies between a true Streamline Moderne building (see 2nd photo) and the one proposed by the architect (see 3rd photo). The rounded corners need to be more emphasized. Sadly, as you can see in the before and after photos at the bottom of this page, the only other surviving Streamline Moderne building located across from Mission Plaza (see 4rd photo) was, with respect to the treatment of the windows, altered to resemble another totally unrelated historical style (see 5th photo). Thank you for your consideration in this matter. - Allan Cooper
