Public Comment for 2025 Paving Project - Active Transportation Committee Meeting 11/21 @ 6pm
Hello,
I live in the neighborhood bounded by Tank Farm, Poinsettia, Hollyhock, and Bougainvillea, and would
like to provide public comment for the 2025 Paving Project proposed revisions to Tank Farm Road
between Poinsettia and Righetti Ranch Road.
I strongly approve of the Tank Farm "road diet" to one lane after Poinsettia. I drive Johnson Ave.
frequently and the road diet has made the road much safer, easier to drive, and easier to see
pedestrians. I note that according to the report the Tank Farm diet would add to the time it takes me to
turn left from hollyhock onto Tank Farm, but I think it would be well worth it anyway.
I am very glad to hear that a pedestrian crossing is recommended for Tank Farm/Sunrose/Morning Glory.
As you may know, San Luis Coastal provides a bus stop at Bougainvillea for Los Ranchos and LAMS, but
not SLOHS, as the bus stop is slightly outside the radius for SLOHS bus stops. High school students
must cross Tank Farm to get to the nearest bus stop at French Park. For most students in our
neighborhood, detouring to a crosswalk turns a 10 minute walk into a 20 minute walk, so they jaywalk
across Tank Farm to and from the bus stop instead, which is dangerous. I have had conversations with
the Transportation Department at San Luis Coastal, but they refuse to make an exception to add a
SLOHS bus stop at Bougainvillea (even though they make exceptions to the radius rule elsewhere in the
city). Having a crosswalk at that location would add greatly to the safety of the high school students in
our neighborhood when going to and from school.
In addition to the high school students, residents who wish to go to French Park can often be seen
jaywalking across Tank Farm, so it would be preferable to have a safer alternative. Not too long ago, a
pedestrian was killed on Tank Farm while jaywalking near the railroad bridge overpass.
The proposed Tank Farm changes would also provide bicyclists from our neighborhood a safer and easier
way to access Tank Farm eastbound. Currently Tank Farm is so wide that it is hard to make an
unprotected left turn.
Reducing the lanes to one each way and placing a pedestrian beacon crossing at Tank Farm/Morning
Glory/Sunrose would help greatly, but I am still concerned about the speed of traffic traveling westbound
from the Righetti roundabout combined with the lack of visibility around the curve. Please consider
1
additional safety measures to ensure that pedestrians are not in danger due to drivers speeding around
the curve and failing to notice the crossing pedestrians in time to stop.
Thank you for reading and considering my input. I appreciate the work you are doing to increase
pedestrian and bicyclist safety (and driver safety too) and am looking forward to the improvements.
