Dear Mayor and Council members,
I understand large cities using election districting. Los Angeles has over 250,000 people in a district.
On the other hand, a small town like San Luis Obispo does not have large areas, ghettos, neighborhoods, that
are identifiable as segregated and under-represented.
If a person has an interest in city government, I believe that should lead to involvement as an advisory body
member or other volunteer activity in the community. Through such participation, one will learn about the
people, policies and process involved, earn name recognition of public service, and be prepared for running for
office.
Yes, it would be easier and cheaper to run in a small district. But if one has earned recognition for service,
raising funds for election shows there is interest in supporting that person.
We are not seeing a lot of people stepping up to run recently, and forcing one's choice to be limited from one
small area of town does not seem reasonable to me.
