Dear Planning Commissioners,
I thought I could be at tonight's meeting to provide public comment so didn't email you beforehand, but
unfortunately was not able to make it. However, I watched the meeting online. Thank you so much for
addressing the neighborhood issues, especially related to Cal Poly and illegal fraternities for the major
city goals. I am hopeful that we may be able to turn the tide and start to make progress!
Commissioner Houghton again brought up the idea of the summit to get different groups together to
discuss and solve this issue. I love the idea and hope that it is possible. I have been attending the
Student Community Liason Committee (SCLC) for over a year and unfortunately, Cal Poly has not been
willing to address the issue, so that does not seem to be the best forum. The City (code enforcement)
continues to say they don't have adequate staff. And the City Council says it's "working with Cal Poly"
and wishes it would take more responsibility for its fraternities. So the problem is not getting solved.
A reporter for the Tribune has been investigating the situation in depth and hopefully, the story will be
published in the next month or so. She has had difficulty getting information from Cal Poly because it
claims that fraternities are independent of the university. Perhaps the publicity, and your encouragement
for the city to encourage Cal Poly to help solve this problem, will finally cause some movement toward a
solution.
I just wanted to express my sincere appreciation to each of you.
With Gratitude,
Kathie Walker
