Dear Mayor Stewart and members of the City Council,
We are deeply saddened to read Sadie Dittenber’s well documented article regarding the plight of Kathie
and Steve Walker in yesterday’s Tribune.
We’ve are fifty-plus years residents of the city and have been active participants in the public sector
throughout that time. We know that the issues involving Cal Poly fraternities started a few years before
our arrival. We’ve always tried to see both sides of what is a town and gown controversy going beck to
Oxford University’s students being forced to leave the city in the fourteenth century.
We’ve also lived through several sets of “Cal Poly Riots” that tarnished the reputation of both the
University and the city.
What the Walker’s have endured appears to be as egregious as those tragic events.
Surely, every possible resource should be used to remedy this situation. We can’t wait for Cal Poly to
create its own fraternity row on campus or even student disciplinary action. Violations of the noise
ordinance should be better documented and enforced. Beyond that the basic rights of the Walkers needs
the utmost protection. This does not appear to be a “he said, she said” situation. Tragically, some
students are harassing a family beyond the boundaries of human decency.
Please put this matter first on your agenda. In our longstanding role as community historians we regard
this as a matter that speaks volumes concerning what our city is all about.
