Dear Mayoress Stewart and Members of the Council:
I endorse the recommendations of the Residents for Quality Neighborhoods in their correspondence to
you. They are thoughtfully conceived for the improved management of our City and its residential
neighborhoods. If, upon reflection, you find the budget would suffer too much constraint in appointing
new officers to monitor noise reduction and abuse of fraternity satellites without documentation, you
might consider removing the DEI Manager's title and duties and rather assign new duties and a new role
toward the betterment of the neighborhoods. You must be aware of the many corporations who have
cancelled their DEI budgets toward more prudent allocation. This does not suggest that the concept of
diversity, equity, inclusion would lose its validity in current and future legislation/discussion.
I have a more immediate concern in proposing more attention and action to creek clearance, something
that has been abandoned for over 2 decades. While homeowners are meant to be responsible for such
clearance, it is not possible for homeowners who are elderly or handicapped to do such clearance as
needed. Further, huge trees have grown in spaces where there were no such species beforehand, like the
black walnut overtaking our creek, at the cost of our willows, native species, and the wildlife: egrets and
deer and aquatic life. In view of the wildfires raging as you meet, and the uncertainty of our climate
future, the City should be more pro-active in this regard.
Thank you for your attention in this matter.
Respectfully yours,
Genevieve Czech, 612 Stanford Drive, SLO
