Mayor Stewart and Council Members,
I'm writing to urge you to make Neighborhood Wellness a Major City Goal for the 2025-2027
Budget.
My wife and I have lived in SLO for 49 years and over the past few years our rental home on
Hathway has become surrounded by fraternities illegally operating.
The St. Fratty's Day Event has progressively become more dangerous and in 2024, it was
terrifying for our female student tenants; drunken crowds forced their way onto our property,
knocking down temporary protective fencing we installed and tried to force themselves into the
home. A large group was successful in climbing onto our roof. Our property was damaged, and
our tenants were extremely frightened and their efforts to get help from the police did not
materialize. It was pure luck that no one got injured on our property.
After my wife attended an RQN meeting last month, she felt there would be more of the same
chaos and problems for St. Fratty’s Day, March 2025. We have decided to try to sell our home to
avoid being held liable for our tenants' or others' injuries on our property.
It's disappointing that our city’s lack of enforcement of illegal and dangerous activities in our
neighborhoods is making it difficult to live there resulting in people selling their homes. I'm
asking you to make neighborhoods a priority and allocate funds to improve residents' peace,
safety, and quality of life in the next budget by adding more code enforcement officials to
eliminate illegal fraternities and satellite operations and more police personnel to better enforce
the noise ordinances and illegal gatherings
Thank you.
