changing mentoring programs; and
Whereas, since opening for service in 1995, Big Brothers Big Sisters’ volunteer mentors has
improved the lives of over 4,000 local children; and
Whereas, Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs are an evidence based, prevention
program with statistically significant effectiveness at reducing drug use and violence,
improving youth mental health, and academic performance; and
Whereas, 98% of children in Big Brothers Big Sisters’ program graduate from high school
and 75% continue their post high school education; and
Whereas, volunteer mentors and professional staff support family wellness and ensure that
child safety standards are met; and
Whereas, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County’s volunteers invested over 19,200
hours of volunteer time in 2024, which is valued at $643,008 by The Independent Sector; and
Whereas, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County has been honored with numerous
awards by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, including the prestigious 2023 Growth Award.
Whereas, the city of San Luis Obispo formally recognizes the month of January as National
Mentoring Month and embraces the vision that all children should achieve their full potential.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire
City Council hereby recognize Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County, on their 30th
Anniversary for the quality youth mentoring programs that they provide for the children and
families in San Luis Obispo.
