Council,
I’m writing to encourage you to adopt Neighborhood Wellness as a major City goal for 2025 - 2027. I am
fortunate to live in a wonderful neighborhood in SLO, but both of my parents live in neighborhoods that have
been significantly altered by student rentals, in particular fraternity houses. I believe the Planning Commission
included it as an issue that they will she focused on, so it would make sense that the City aligns with that.
It seems like the City has limited resources to enforce their municipal code, so this issue hasn’t been
addressed. If the issue is adopted at a major City goal, would that open funding to support the City in its
efforts? I’m hopeful that would be the case so that there will be enough resources to address this since year
after year it gets worse and expands. While I enjoy the vibrancy that student add to the City, it’s the fraternities
specifically that create a nuisance.
Much of my childhood in SLO, my parents were renters. I’ve lived in many neighborhoods across the City and
have seen a ton of change, which comes with pros and cons like anything. My dad purchased an house off of
Foothill near the base of Cerro San Luis over 20 years ago and has had fraternity houses move nearby in the
past few years. How can they be operating in R2 neighborhoods? Why are their loud parties not receiving
citations? As Cal Poly continues to increase enrollment, the issue will only compound. I’m hopeful the City will
include Neighborhood Wellness as a goal to insure residents and students can both enjoy their right to live in
peace.
Thank you,
Taylor
