Dear Mayor Stewart and City Council Members: Michelle Shoresman, Jan Howell Marx, Emily Francis, and
Michael Boswell,
I am sorry that I am unable to be in attendance at your Community Forum on Thursday evening. As always, it
will be an enlivening and educational evening.
I have long been an advocate for a vital downtown and an advocate for the arts as a strong component for that
vitality.
San Luis Obispo is blessed with a wonderful downtown, the center of our City and the nerve center of the
County. Though a healthy downtown has traditionally been supported primarily by retail activity, in today’s
social scene and economy it is necessary to diversify and to add new attractions to ensure that citizens and
non-residents will visit and revisit.
The City is fortunate to have Mission Plaza and its extension, the Cultural Corridor, with its Historical Mission
and museum, the SLO County Historical Museum, the SLO Art Museum, the Children’s Museum, and the
"coming attractions’ of the new SLO Repertory Theater, the new Mission Plaza improvements, the new City
parking structure, and the continuing “Art in Public Spaces” program. In the collective, these attractions add a
sense of place and character to the downtown.
Thank you for your consistent efforts to strengthen the downtown, to support the arts, and to enliven our local
economy and thereby create a more livable and enjoyable community.
With respect and gratitude,
John Dunn
