Dear Planning Commissioners,
Please support the rotating safe parking program for those living in their cars.
People make judgments about the "type" of persons living in their cars, with sweeping generalizations
that they are criminals. Within San Luis Obispo, there are homeless college students, single mothers,
and other people who function during the day without a stable place to sleep at night. My husband and I
got to know a college student who lost their rental and was unable to afford rent, so had no choice but to
live in their van. Neither Cuesta College nor Cal Poly allow their homeless students to park on campus
overnight. We allowed the homeless student to park on our property for 1 1/2 years until they were able
to finish college and move away for a job. They are successful today! There are several other college
students currently in the same situation who would benefit from this program.
It is against the law in San Luis Obispo to sleep in your car on a public road, and the safe parking program
will allow people to better their lives in the long run by having a place to sleep.
Thank you,
Kathie Walker
