Honorable Mayor Stewart, City Council Members Boswell, Francis, Marx and Shoresman:
As long time residents of the city, we are deeply appreciative of the rich and vibrant arts and culture available to us
here.
The current Major City Goals include “Economic Resiliency, Cultural Vitality and Fiscal Sustainability”. Perhaps
‘Economic Vitality’ and ‘Fiscal sustainability’ do not need cheerleaders, but we speak to the ‘Cultural Vitality’ of
the City.
This can be quantifiable and measurable and a component of economic resiliency and fiscal sustainability ,
through the visitors to the city for the music and film festivals, the shows at the Fremont, SLOREP or the PAC, the
quality of the exhibits at SLOMA.
But cultural vitality is also a part of the city’s identity that in a more qualitative way brings visitors and, perhaps
more importantly, immeasurably enriches the lives of its residents. We feel pride and joy when we walk downtown
and our 7 year old granddaughter want to swing through SLOMA to see the latest exhibit, or is excited to see her 16
year old cousin dance at the PAC. This is what enhances our quality of life to such a great degree and is a part of
what makes living here so special.
We strongly encourage you to continue to place a high priority on cultural vitality as a major city goal, both for the
economic benefits it brings to the city and for the joy it brings its residents.
Thank you for your consideration,
Sandi Sigurdson and Steve McGrath
