Dear SLO City Council,
My name is Maggi Benson and I am a civil engineering student at Cal Poly. I am emailing regarding the
Grand Avenue Pilot Project, and wish to express my support for the project and future developments in
bike infrastructure in SLO.
As someone who lives very close to Grand (on Graves St.), I use the street most every day, as a driver,
cyclist, and pedestrian. As a driver, I have noticed minimal negative effects to my driving experience.
Aside from the conversion of Slack St. to a one-way street to the east of Grand, I find it easier as a driver
to navigate getting downtown from my home, as there are less lanes of traffic to watch out for when
making a left-hand turn. As a biker, I feel safer and more likely to bike downtown with the addition of the
wide bike lanes and striped buffers.
My hope is that the City of SLO will continue to pursue projects similar to this one and make it safer and
easier to navigate SLO by bike. Speaking as someone who only recently began driving in SLO, it would be
very beneficial for Cal Poly students, many of whom do not own cars, to be able to feel safe and
comfortable biking around SLO. Hopefully, future projects will also include physical infrastructure
similar to the developments on Chorro Street, in order to create a physical barrier between bikes and
cars, and slow traffic.
Thank you for your consideration,
Maggi Benson
