Subject:Public Comment - Grand Ave Pilot Project Support - Collin Parker, Cal Poly Urbanists

Dear SLO City Council,
My name is Collin Parker, a city planning student at Cal Poly and a board member of Cal Poly Urbanists,
and I am writing regarding the recent pilot improvements to Grand Ave. I'd like to extend my support for
the addition of new bike lanes and reduction of auto-travel lanes.
The street had made me nervous to use both as a pedestrian and cyclist, and while any improvements
could never solve all safety problems, I feel much safer using Grand Ave with the increased buffer
between car travel and other modes. I hope that the city will make some adjustments with what they
learn from the pilot and install some more permanent infrastructure.
In conversation with my peers, there were some minor issues mentioned. A friend of mine who lives east
of Grand feels less safe entering Grand to go south via car, mentioning that he must now make an
unprotected left that Slack St is unidirectional and that all-way stop is lost. I and many of many of my
peers also felt that the project's existence was communicated poorly to students, with the vast majority
of us hearing about it through word of mouth and not city communications. Given the impact that Grand
Ave has on the student population, further coordination with Cal Poly to share changes with students
would have been appreciated.
Thank you for your time and consideration
