Dear Council,
I appreciate the work you do to lead our city in the right direction.
However, when decisions impact the safety and functionality of our community, I believe it’s important
to speak up. My family has lived off Johnson for 30 years, and we have witnessed firsthand the daily
congestion caused by the “road diet.” The recent fire at Bishop should serve as a warning of the potential
dangers during emergencies, and the tragedy in Pacific Palisades should be a wake-up call for the
council.
I strongly disagree with the direction the City is taking regarding our roads and transportation.
We are not a large metropolitan area with the mass transit ridership to justify reducing roadways. The
City has previously compared our situation to Fremont—a city of over 200,000 people—to justify more
road diets, but that comparison does not apply to our community. Our residents are parents who need to
drive to work, pick up their children from school, and take them to sports and activities. These daily
responsibilities are not feasible by bus or bike.
Our community needs and wants the ability to drive across town without unnecessary congestion.
Johnson Avenue is a clear example of what we do not want more of, and Chorro is another instance
where well-intended changes do not align with the needs of residents.
I urge you not to reduce lanes on South Higuera, Tank Farm, Broad Street, or Foothill.
Please reconsider the city’s approach to our roadways and prioritize solutions that truly reflect the needs
of our community.
Sincerely,
Hilde A. Minkel
