Dear City Council,
th
Thank you for the opportunity to comment re. Feb 4 Agenda Item 7a:
1. I strongly oppose using concrete curbing for bike lanes.
The concrete lanes already installed around SLO are dangerous. They’ve made it more di?icult for cars to safely
make a right turn – harder to see cyclists, harder to avoid pedestrians, and cars hitting curbs.
Furthermore, concrete lanes will be a safety nightmare of unintended consequences. For example:
What happens if SLO has an evacuation-level event like a wildfire? Picture trying to evacuate people via Chorro,
Osos, or Higuera with vehicles pinned in by impassable concrete borders. What if emergency vehicles need to get
around tra?ic? There’s no place to pull over.
Personally, I’d like to see the existing concrete lanes around SLO removed. At the very least, the City should
recognize that concrete curbs were a mistake and switch to a di?erent material.
Use materials that are easy to install, flexible, and don’t impede ingress/egress. Vivid paint and reflective markers
are enough. Vertical signage perhaps to mark lane start/finish but it’s overkill to have vertical posts the entire
length of bike lanes. And certainly not concrete.
2. I also oppose reducing Higuera Street to 3 lanes. Fewer lanes will increase congestion, not reduce it. It’s a major
thoroughfare between Madonna/Tank Farm/LOVR that is already congested enough.
Thank you,
Jan W. Haynes
