Dear Mayor Stewart and council members,
I’m writing to strongly encourage you to move forward with the Higuera Complete Streets Project. As a
parent and daily bike commuter, I know firsthand the importance of safe, accessible streets. My family is
committed to biking to school and work because we share the city's goal of reducing our climate impact,
but there are still a few routes that make us nervous—Higuera Street is one of them. This project
addresses those problem areas by making critical improvements for cyclists and pedestrians while
maintaining access for drivers.
After years of city outreach, the SLO majority has spoken: Residents want safer crossings, better bike
lanes, and traffic calming measures to reduce speeding. This plan delivers all of that. More importantly, it
makes our streets safer for kids, families and residents of all ages and abilities.
A well-connected, bike- and pedestrian-friendly city isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity. Investing in
similar improvements in other parts of SLO has encouraged active transportation, contributed to
support of local businesses, and helped make our community a safer, healthier place to live. This project
will expand those gains while moving us closer to our climate and modeshare goals.
I urge you to approve and prioritize this project for the benefit of all residents. Thank you for your
leadership and commitment to a better, safer SLO.
Kim Bisheff
