Hi Council,
I am writing today to express my support for item 7A, the South Higuera Complete Streets project.
I live in the Meadow Park neighborhood and work at the south end of South Higuera, and use the
proposed roads daily. As an experienced cyclist I currently choose to ride to work on almost every
day. I work for a company whose core values include environmental stewardship, yet despite wanting
to, a number of those that I work with do not feel safe walking or riding a bike to work due to the
speed of traffic along this road. I am writing today to help ensure that I as well as others have a safe
route to and from work and can have the opportunity to choose to walk and bike instead of being
reliant on a vehicle for safety.
Additionally, I know that there is opposition to this project and so I ask that you prioritize the following
when considering any alternatives to the proposed plan.
1. Improving intersection safety at Madonna & Los Osos Valley Road. Madonna specifically, is a
critical connection for many middle and high school students who are not yet able to drive to
have a safe route to school via their bikes.
2. Providing stronger protected bike lanes with more durable physical separation from vehicles.
While the flexible posts provide a butter from traffic, they are frequently run over and damaged
by vehicles, and do not provide the much-needed physical buffer that allows people who are
more novice bike riders to feel safe navigating the roadway.
3. Needed ADA accessibility upgrades such as improved curb ramps and additional pedestrian
crossings.
Finally, I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to the city staff who have gathered what I am sure are
100's of comments on the proposed plan and have fine-tuned the design into what it is today.
Thank you,
Kathryn Hicks
