Dear Council Members,
My name is Hollie West, and as some of you know, I love to ride my bike to get around this city! I so
appreciate all the amazing bike infrastructure here - when I moved to San Luis Obispo from Orange
County, I never thought I'd be the type of person to ride a bike on the road for fear of being hit, but here I
am, ten years later, with a bicycle as my primary mode of transportation. Thank you for prioritizing transit
of all types.
I am writing today as a resident of SLO who lives close to and rides regularly on South Higuera for work
meetings, to meet friends and to grocery shop. I am so excited for the changes that are proposed in this
complete streets project. These improvements will greatly improve my safety while biking to the grocery
store. Thank you.
Regarding the specific questions from staff, I support the following:
1. "Road diet": I support the proposed road diet since it right-sizes our road and balances for
equitably the different transportation modes that use this street and the traffic study shows that
it will have minimal impact on car traffic.
2. Vertical separation material: I support the proposed materials. I believe these provide a
balance of flexibility, cost-efficiency, and safety. If the concrete curbs are installed from Bridge
to Margarita, I recommend including vertical posts and starts and ends, painting them and/or
including reflective strips to make them visible to cars and bikes
3. Higuera/LOVR Intersection Design: I support option 2, which provides a safer path for bikes. I
have many students at Cal Poly who do not have cars and would like to bike, but feel they can't
because they do not feel safe. Feeling safe is key to more bikes and fewer cars (less traffic)
4. Madonna Road shared bike path: I support the continued effort to establish a more robust
bike and pedestrian path along the Madonna Road overpass. Connected bike and pedestrian
infrastructure is key to utilization. If there is a two-way shared-use path, could the additional
bike lane on the other side be removed to allow for wider lanes to improve compliance with City
and Caltrans requirements?
Thank you for your work on this important project. I can't wait to bike on these new lanes!
