Dear City Council,
Thank you for your work.
I’m writing to OPPOSE both reducing lanes and concrete bike lanes.
I understand the goal is to stop speeding and protect people but good grief. The changes to Johnson Ave., Chorro,
and Santa Barbara St. have made them LESS safe!
Chorro now has cars and bikes trapped by concrete curbs. Santa Barbara St. is clogged from Broad St. into
downtown. Drivers are cutting through once-safe neighborhoods to avoid the crazy lane/bike changes.
I’m especially concerned that we’re now in danger in emergency situations. There will be no way to quickly
evacuate the city. And ambulances can’t get around cars.
Removing car lanes in order to manipulate traffic speeds makes no sense. You’re trading one unsafe condition
(speeding) for another (traffic congestion).
The concrete bike curbs are particularly egregious and downright dangerous.
Yes to signage, crossings, striping, bright paint, and signal lights. And citations if necessary.
I wish everyone could bike daily but most people don’t …. because we can’t! Think about elderly, commuters, car
poolers, city services, etc. Please consider the majority of us (including myself, a senior) who rely on driving to get
to healthcare, groceries, and work. Don’t make it more difficult and unsafe.
Please do NOT continue this nonsense of road diet and concrete bike lanes. Please also remove concrete bike
curbs. Focus on facilitating travel around town, not congesting it, together with safe cycling.
Thank you,
M. Marshall
