Good afternoon SLO City Council,
I'm really happy to see agenda item 6.a SLO Transit’s Short-Range Transit Plan scheduled for the
February 25 meeting.
Glad to see that Reinstating services to pre-pandemic levels is top priority. We had heard from
community members whose daily routes had disappeared during the pandemic, and therefore had their
livelihoods disrupted, some having to change/cancel part time jobs because of lack of transportation.
Increasing access to public transportation directly impacts equity, inclusion, and economic opportunity
for communities left on the margins, and therefore an interest of ours. Many low-income individuals,
people with disabilities, immigrants, and communities of color rely on public transit as their primary
mode of transportation. Expanding bus routes ensures they can access jobs, healthcare, education,
and community resources.
Any effort to increase routes near the lowest income neighborhoods will have a great positive impact
in the City of SLO and will count with our support, as it allows small businesses and nonprofits (like
Diversity Coalition) to reach and serve more diverse community members.
When organizing our community events and choosing accessible venues, we are also increasingly
thinking of accessible transportation routes. Public transit enables people to participate in civic life,
attend community events, and access cultural spaces, fostering a sense of belonging.
Thank you for the investment on public transit!
Sincerely,
--
