City of San Luis Obispo City Council Mayor Stewart Vice-Mayor Shoresman Councilmembers Boswell, Francis and Marx Re: Agenda Item 6a, REVIEW AN APPEAL OF A PLANNING COMMISSION DECISION TO APPROVE THE WATERMAN VILLAGE PROJECT AT 466 DANA STREET (ARCH-0329-2022, EID-0637-2022) Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this agenda item. I write to encourage the City Council to deny the appeal to the Waterman Village Project. As a former resident of downtown San Luis Obispo and member of the Smart Share Housing Solutions board, I have been aware of and working to improve the shortage of homes affordable to the city's many lower-resourced residents for many years. This project respects the terms of Mary Gail Black's bequest by maintaining a park area at the front of the property accessible to the public and by rehabilitating the crumbling adobe. The project in addition will create a community hub that will bring life and purpose back to this beautiful property, The appeal incorrectly designates it as 'transient housing'--it is not, as the City Council is well aware. The homes are long-term rentals for low and very low income residents. And as the draft resolution to deny the appeal notes, this use of the land is consistent with other multifamily uses on Dana Street, while maintaining a clear view from the street of this historic property. I believe this project will continue the City's path of innovation and pro-housing leadership. I applaud the City for its partnership on this important project to bring attainable homes to downtown San Luis Obispo, near transit and services. Thank you for denying the appeal so this much-needed project can proceed.
