Women's History Month ProclamationWHEREAS, Women’s History Month was first recognized in the United States in 1987 when the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress for its creation because they noted that women were represented in less than 3% of history texts; and WHEREAS, San Luis Obispo women have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our Nation, our State, and the City of San Luis Obispo in countless ways, recorded and unrecorded; and WHEREAS, local women have played and continue to play critical economic, cultural, and social roles in every sphere of life in our community by comprising a significant portion of the labor force working inside and outside of the home; and WHEREAS, local women have played and continue to play essential roles in our local volunteer and non-profit sector, starting and growing organizations like the League of Women Voters, the Monday Club, the Women’s Legacy Fund, and Race Matters SLO, among many others; and WHEREAS, local women have served our country courageously in the military and law enforcement and have made major contributions to American history, teaching, and literature; and WHEREAS, local women have been leaders in positions of government and business and in increasing numbers, are rising to prominent positions; and WHEREAS, local women have been leaders in progressive social change, in securing the rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, and in civil rights and social justice movements that help create a more fair and just society for all; and WHEREAS, fewer than one-third of California legislators are women and California ranks 28th nationally for the percentage of women serving in elected office; and NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo on behalf of the entire Council and in collaboration with the League of Women Voters San Luis Obispo County proclaim March as “Women’s History Month.” Women’s History Month March 2025 March 4, 2025 Mayor Date
