growth and cultural enrichment in communities; and
WHEREAS, in 2008, San Luis Obispo established a Tourism Business Improvement District, allowing the
hotel industry to raise funds solely dedicated to tourism marketing to attract visitors to SLO; and
WHEREAS, the appointed TBID Board members, in collaboration with City staff and agency partners,
guide the marketing efforts for the public-facing destination brand Visit San Luis Obispo, driving
overnight visitation with the mission of fostering a welcoming community, supporting a vibrant
economy, and reinvesting in the city and its residents; and
WHEREAS, in 2022, Visit San Luis Obispo launched the MidWeekend campaign to encourage midweek
stays and showcase the city's vibrant culture and attractions Sunday through Thursday; and
WHEREAS, this initiative has set a benchmark in the travel industry, inspiring other destinations to
promote midweek travel as a strategy for sustainable tourism and enhanced visitor experiences; and
WHEREAS, studies show that taking time off during the workweek improves mental health by
reducing stress, enhancing productivity and fostering overall well-being; and
WHEREAS, sustainable tourism practices, including midweek travel, help alleviate the carbon impact
of travel by distributing visitor impact more evenly, reducing congestion and supporting local
businesses beyond peak weekend surges; and
WHEREAS, midweek travel offers more affordable accommodation rates, dining specials, and
exclusive experiences including the Thursday night downtown Farmers’ Market, world-class wine
tastings, cultural events, and so much more, ensuring visitors Live the SLO Life.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Erica A. Stewart, Mayor of the City of San Luis Obispo, on behalf of the entire City
Council, hereby proclaim San Luis Obispo as the MidWeekend Vacation Capital of the World and
commend Visit San Luis Obispo’s efforts to encourage residents and visitors alike to embrace the
benefits of midweek travel for our collective economic, personal and environmental wellbeing.
