Area Agency on Aging
The Area Agency on Aging (Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens) is governed by a
12‐member Board of Directors and serves both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.
A majority of the Board must be 60 years of age or older. Five of the 12‐members are
recommended by the following government agencies (one appointee per agency):
‐ San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors
‐ Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors
‐ Santa Maria City Council
‐ Santa Barbara City Council
‐ San Luis Obispo City Council
‐ The remainder are recommended by various community agencies and organizations.
The Board is responsible for the corporate functions. It is also the policy maker and grantor
of funds from the Older Americans Act and Older Californians Acts. The Board sets policy
concerning programs funded and the internal operations of the Agency.
The Board has four major responsibilities: senior advocate, communicator of needs and
concerns of older adults, promoter of services for older adults and planner, assessor and
monitor of the Area Plan.
