Welcome to poet George Bilgere’s
online newsletter. Every day
George selects a poem by a writer
he’s crazy about and he says a
few words about why he picked it.

Here’s a poem for today, April 1, 2025
The Trees
by Philip Larkin
The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.
Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too.
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.
Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.

Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

Why I Chose This Poem
This poem has been a close friend of mine for
many years. More than any poem I know it
reminds me that a new start, a green
beginning, is possible.
April Is National Poetry Month
This year, Poetry Town marks the
occasion with throwback links to last
year’s Poem of the Day by George.
Come back each day this month to
read a poem from his collections.
