Good morning,
We want to be sure the Council understands the sense of urgency among renters, as housing
costs continue to skyrocket while living conditions deteriorate.
We look forward to the study sessions on renter protections and a Rental Registry.
Sometimes, studies are where good policies go to die. We’ve all seen that happen.
Let’s not study this problem to death. Let’s ensure that we not only research and learn, but
promptly adopt and implement appropriate policies.
It’s not enough to be compassionate. We have to act!
Please program sufficient time and funds for staff to study renter protections and a rental
registry, but also to adopt and implement effective pro-renter policies.
We know what the big issues are. In addition to a comprehensive rental registry, we need to:
o put the brakes on skyrocketing rents
o update health and safety requirements
o close loopholes in the Tenant Protection Act, and
o protect renters from no-fault evictions.
