Subject:Support the Tank Farm Road Diet
Mayor Stewart and Councilmembers,
I am writing to offer my strong support for the Tank Farm Road Diet Alt 1 for a few simple reasons:
1. It improves safety for all road users.
2. It maintains vehicular capacity at the intersections, where it is needed most for storage and
throughput.
3. It enhances visibility of people walking and biking and will slow speeds to a small degree and
eliminate unsafe passing.
4. It implements the adopted goals and policies of city for improved mode split and the Vision Zero
Action Plan.
As a new/returning resident in town and a lifelong advocate for both roadway safety and efficient
throughput of travelers, this road diet is a no brainer and is not as controversial as some make it out to
be. My wife and I purchased at home at the base of Righetti Hill and while this plan may prevent my wife
from passing/speeding down Tank Farm to Bright Life Day Care, it will also encourage us to walk, jog and
bike our kids to daycare, all the while preserving vehicular capacity and maintaining essentially the same
auto travel time in the corridor.
I can't attend tonight's meeting but as a former Public Works Director who has designed and
implemented many road diets in many CA communities, all with success (most people who oppose the
concept support the final product), and as a father of two budding cyclists around town, I strongly urge
you to use logic, science and well-adopted civil engineering best practices to drive your decision making
over naysayers who complain the city is doing "too much" for vulnerable road users.
Yours sincerely,
Peter and Hanna Brown (and Bo and Lena too).
Hillside Drive residents and daily multimodal users of Tank Farm Rd.
