RE: Item 7.c. Paving Project - Support for Tank Farm Road Diet without modification
To: Mayor Stewart and Council Members Boswell, Marx, Francis, and Shoresman:
As you know, Bike SLO County advocates for bicycling in our community and countywide. A significant
part of that focuses on rider protections that will promote more usage by people considering cycling for
everyday transportation and recreation. People will not engage in that activity unless they feel safe. This
is why we support Tank Farm Road Design Alternative 1 (Road Diet). We are dismayed to hear that those
plans will not be implemented as designed initially and also endorsed at the Active Transportation
Committee, with single lanes of traffic providing much-needed distance from and calming of vehicle traffic
in this area of the community. People who walk and bike use this route daily to travel to schools,
shopping, and work, and with additional housing being built in the area, it will only become more unsafe.
Sacrificing the safety of those outside a vehicle 100% of the time is neither creative nor in alignment with
our community goals and guiding documents.
We prefer the most robust design for rider safety and encouragement. That this has been reduced
concerns us and if eliminated, dismays us that our collective goals of climate action, community
improvement, and rider encouragement will be thwarted here. Please preserve the essential features
included in the road diet: widening the bike lanes, delineating them, and reducing motor vehicle lanes to
one each way.
Sincerely,
Gary Havas Rick Ellison
