Subject:May 15, 2025 ATC meeting item #5b - Safe Routes to School Grant
Dear ATC members,
I am contacting you regarding May 15, 2025 ATC meeting item #5b – Safe Routes to School
(SRTS) since there is a unique, time limited opportunity to get outside funding for this critical
need.
An essential part of any city’s active transportation program is a SRTS plan
o All “Platinum” bike friendly communities have a SRTS plan
There is federal money for SLO to finally develop our SRTS plan, we just need to ask
Safe Streets & Roads for All (SS4A) funding key info (transportation.gov/grants/SS4A)
o $1B in federal funds for active transportation will be awarded this year
o Historically almost all SRTS plan requests have been funded
o The application is very short and easy
o Grant funds can cover consultants to develop plan and others to review it - minimizing sta?
time
o In-kind donations and state funding (i.e. OTS grants, etc.) can be used for the required 20%
non-federal match
o Application is due June 26, 2025.
Before submitting application, an “active” Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) is required.
Verify status/apply at sam.gov.
If our UEI is inactive, it can take up to 30 days to update it.
Last cycle Chico and Bakersfield were funded by SS4A to develop their SRTS plans
o They shared their applications with us in February
Please vote to create a team to develop a SRTS plan application for this grant
o Include ATC members (3 max), community members, and sta?
o This level of engagement will minimize sta? workload, improves the application, and can be
highlighted in the narrative
o Team will work out the details, don’t need to have it all figured out now
Thank you,
Helene Finger
