To the Advisory board
I am writing to you as a concerned and negatively impacted resident in the Alta Vista neighborhood. I
urge you not to approve the renewal (and new approvals) of fraternities in my neighborhood. As a
resident of San Luis Obispo, I have become increasingly and regularly affected by high volume noise, and
broken glass on the streets from weekend (and mid-week) gatherings of party-goers that live the life of
getting drunk, yelling at the top of their lungs, and disrespecting neighbors and the neighborhood we live
in, even when asked respectfully to decrease noise levels, me and my family, including our Cal Poly
student daughter, are feeling stressed by the situation. While I don't have an ultimate solution to this
epidemic, I know that approving the continuation of law-breaking organizations will not be the answer
moving forward. I echo other impacted, non-student residents in my neighborhood when they cite
examples of large crowds, loud music, and intoxicated individuals carrying on with disrespectful
behavior that no family would want to be subject to. Landlords who rent to these organizations and
tenants look the other way and let properties deteriorate while the congestion adds to declining living
standards. I have witnessed many of my good neighbors leaving this area over the years due to this very
unfortunate state. I have even met both Cal Poly and Cuesta students that don't want to live in my
neighborhood because of this disruptive climate. As other concerned neighbors have expressed,
enforcement is key to tamping down the problem, yet, with so many satelite houses throughout the
neighborhood, a good percentage of Greek Organizations have events without permits (such as
rushes, meetings, and parties) with large and frequently unruly gatherings. Obvious signs of these
gatherings, besides the very large number of attendees, include drinking game tables in front yards,
scattered bottles and plastic cups in yards/streets and sidewalks; empty kegs and trash-littered front
yards, safety fencing, large plastic sheets draped across driveways ; couches and living room furniture in
front yards for parties. Signage is also often quite visible without permits. Overall, the only thing that
seems to detour this behavior is calling the police for noise violations and citing unruly gatherings. I
believe this will only continue with the approval of Fraternities and approval by ignoring the occupancy of
their satellite houses. Please do something to address this quality of life issue here in San Luis Obispo.
Our Alta Vista neighborhood and my family's quality of life depends on it.
Respectfully,
Anonymous Alta Vista Neighbor due to fear of further retribution
