Romero Prepared by: Lane Wilson Public Works Director Parks & Buil ings Manager SUBJECT: Heritage Trees CAO RECOMMENDATION: Adopt resolution adding Heritage Trees BACKGROUND: The Heritage Tree Program idea has been included in the Tree Ordi- nance since 1971 . There has been minimal interest in the program. In 1984 , the Tree Committee decided that this was a worthwhile pro- gram and that it should be reactivated. Annual review is made for the dedication of Heritage Trees . In April 1985 , after review of the existing Heritage Trees, proposed trees and the program literature, the Tree Committee submitted a list of 17 trees for possible dedication as Heritage Trees. In 1985 and subsequent years, the City Council has adopted a total of 13 Heritage Trees. This proposal includes four additional trees. FISCAL IMPACT Funds were approved in the 1986-87 budget in the amount of $2 ,000. This will be reviewed annually and modified as necessary for specific work. Staff time used on this aspect of the tree program is minimual and is included within budget submittals. ALTERNATIVES 1 . Adopt resolution designating trees proposed as Heritage Trees (staff recommendation) 2 . Adopt with modifications 3 . Do not adopt HERITAGE TREES PROPOSED The Tree Committee and staff has identified, reviewed and approved for Council consideration the following new trees: 1 . Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) , 1815 Monterey Street 2 . Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) , 237 Del Mar Court 3. Deodar Cedar (Cedrus deodara) , 1190 Buchon Street 4. Red Horse Chestnut (Aesculus carnea) , 1147 Pismo See attachments for each proposal . ���H���HI�IIQI�UIq�l�ll city of San LUIS OBISpo ONGs COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT Heritage Trees Page 2 CITIZEN INPUT The property owners have agreed with the Heritage Tree Program guidelines and approved the dedication of their trees as San Luis Obispo Heritage Trees. REQUEST The Tree Committee and staff would like the adoption of the Heritage Trees to coincide with the San Luis Obispo Arbor Day ceremonies slated for March 4 - 5, 1988. Arbor Day ceremonies are being planned which will include the presentation of Heritage Tree plaques to the city and property owners. The Tree Committee and staff invite. the Council to participate in the Arbor Day activities. RECOMMENDATIONS Staff recommends that the City Council review and adopt by resolution the trees described herein as Heritage Trees . dh heritage RESOLUTION NO. 6166 (1987 SERIES) A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN LUIS OBISPO ADOPTING SPECIFIC HERITAGE TREES WHEREAS, the City Council has approved a Heritage Tree Program for the City of San Luis Obispo; and WHEREAS, the City Council has previously adopted the following as Heritage Trees; and 1 . Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana) , 1185 Foothill Blvd. 2 . Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) , 1303 Higuera Street 3. Cajeput Tree (Melaleuca leucadendron) , 955 Pepper Street 4 . Floss Silk Tree (Chorisia speciosa) , 941 Chorro Street 5 . Two ( 2) Victorian Box (Pittosporum undulatum) , 696 Monterey Street 7 . Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia soulangeana) , 536 Marsh Street 8 . Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) , 536 Marsh Street 9 . Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) , 1185 Pacific Street 10. Western Redbud (Cercis Occidentalis) , 1060 Pismo Street 11 . Smooth Shell Macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) , 378 Grand Avenue 12 . Cork Oak (Quercus suber) , 396 Lincoln Street 13. California Sycamore (Platanus racemosa) , 9 South Higuera Street WHEREAS, the Tree Committee and staff has identified, reviewed and approved the following trees as Heritage Trees NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED as follows: SECTION 1 .
