This message is from an External Source. Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. The most impactful housing bill of the year passed in the Assembly! Yesterday the Assembly passed AB 2011! This bill will make it easier to build housing on underutilized commercial land such as parking lots and strip malls. It also requires projects to meet strong affordability, labor, and environmental standards. 2 AB 2011 has the potential to bring over 2 million new homes to communities across the state, all while supporting a thriving, well-paid construction workforce to make it happen. This bill passed because we showed up, organized, and spoke out. Leading up to the vote, YIMBYs sent hundreds of letters, made dozens of calls, and personally reached out to their representatives to urge them to say yes to the bill. Thank you to every activist who took action in support of AB 2011! We need to keep up the momentum to make sure AB 2011 becomes law. Will you donate to fuel the fight? AB 2011 wasn’t the only bill we passed! We also passed 6 other bills from our top 10 list, including:  AB 2097, which prohibits costly and unnecessary parking requirements on housing developments near existing public transit.  AB 2221, which makes it easier to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).  SB 886, which streamlines housing permits for student, faculty, and staff housing projects by public universities. These are important steps toward ending the housing shortage, but we’re not done fighting. We need to grow our movement so we can elect more pro- housing candidates, pass more ambitious housing legislation, and end the housing shortage in communities across California and beyond. Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. The good news: AB 2097 passed the Senate this week! This law would get rid of parking mandates, which make it more expensive to build housing near transit. In order to make California more affordable and environmentally sustainable, we need to make it less expensive for people to live near transit. The bad news: There's a chance Newsom will veto this bill unless he hears from people like us. What you can do about it: 2 Go to the Governor's website and fill out the form, and make sure for the subject select field, to scroll down and choose "AB02097" for the subject. Here is some text that you can paste into the letter portion: I’m a California resident and I am writing to urge you to sign AB 2097 (Friedman), which would lower housing costs by ending expensive parking mandates in new housing near transit and in walkable neighborhoods. Please sign AB 2097 and help California take another important step toward tackling both the housing crisis, and the climate crisis. Thanks for fighting the good fight with us! Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. We did the hard work to pass this bill in the Assembly and the Senate — now we need Governor Newsom to sign it into law! AB 2097 has been sitting on his desk for over a week, and it’s in danger of being vetoed. Use your voice and tell him to support this bill! AB 2097 eliminates parking mandates near high quality transit. SIGN THE PETITION 2 This will help California meet its climate goals by reducing our dependence on cars. Eliminating parking minimums will also preserve open space by reducing the amount of land needed to build more homes. Making it more affordable for people to live in transit-rich areas is a critical element of any successful climate plan. Additionally, parking mandates make it more expensive to build homes. Those costs get passed on to renters and buyers, making homes even less affordable. In order to make California more affordable and environmentally sustainable, we need to make it less expensive for people to live near transit. Can we count on you to tell Governor Newsom to sign AB 2097? The bill, which goes into effect January 1, 2023 marks the latest in a long line of state laws intended to remove barriers to housing development and strengthen environmental protections.
