Staff reviewed voting equipment used by other cities in 1986 with mixed results (see attached) . In March 1988 we obtained information from the City of Joplin, Missouri , which installed their own system fairly inexpensively and works well (attached - approximately $1,000) . I met with two members from the firm of Mid-State Sound and Electric Company on Thursday, July 7. They indicate they can build a system similar to the City of Joplin's for approximately $1 ,800 (includes labor & materials) . This would include the Voting Board; a replaceable name panel (one for Council/one for Planning Commission, if desired) ; two rows of lights (ayes, noes) ; and a smaller duplicate control console for the Clerk. The system would not display all votes cast until all members had voted on an item. Other systems display the vote as soon as they are cast. If the Council is interested in installing a similar system, money is available in the City Hall Maintenance/Building Fund. Staff is only requesting whether there is consensus by Council to try this approach. As no legal action is required, this will be placed under Communications at the July 19 Council meeting.
