On behalf of the City of San Luis Obispo, we urge you to uphold the will of the voters by allocating the climate investments laid out in Proposition 4 before the end of the session on September 12. As a community that has been impacted by drought, wildfire risk, flooding, and extreme heat, the City of San Luis Obispo understands the urgency of climate action. Proposition 4 was designed to fund projects that protect vulnerable communities, ensure clean water and clean air, preserve healthy lands, and improve resilience against the climate crisis. These investments are critical to local governments like ours, which are working to safeguard residents, infrastructure, and ecosystems from escalating climate threats, as well as continuing to build upon our open space conservation legacy through the City’s signature Greenbelt Protection Program. Importantly, Proposition 4 was authored in collaboration with more than 160 environmental and environmental justice organizations, emphasizing public health, equity, and sustainability. The measure also advances Justice40 principles by directly allocating more than 40 percent of the total investments to disadvantaged communities, both urban and rural. These commitments reflect the values our city shares: protecting frontline communities, ensuring equitable access to resources, and planning for a sustainable future. California’s leadership on climate action is recognized around the world, and the passage of Proposition 4 reaffirmed that commitment. Leaving these investments unallocated this year would be a setback to the progress voters demanded and communities like ours urgently need. We respectfully ask you to ensure the timely implementation of Proposition 4 investments so that cities, counties, and regions can continue advancing resilience, public health, and climate protection for all Californians. Sincerely, Erica A. Stewart Mayor, City of San Luis Obispo
