TO SLO CITY COUNCIL: 9-15-25
To Whom It May Concern,
It has come to my attention that a Grand Jury recently reported many findings which
indicated the SLO City is in denial of the allegations regarding properly addressing unpermitted
Greek Fraternity and Sorority houses in San Luis Obispo neighborhoods.
As a long-time resident of Alta Vista Neighborhood, I have witnessed an escalation of Greek
organizations using “Satellite houses” occupied in R-1/R-2 SLO City Zones. This is concerning to
me. My only defense is to call SLO PD on noise disturbances, unruly gatherings, parties and
“Rush” events often with hundreds of people attending. In fact, as I am writing to you, I have
received a text from my immediate neighbors regarding a satellite sorority party that I had to
Call the SLO PD. Because they were warned by the police, I was contacted by them. Here’s
what they said to me:
“Thank you for responding so quickly! We will be gone by 5.” (Party started at 2pm on a
Monday with loud music and screaming) “We usually have these events at sorority satellites
since the Greek life houses aren’t super big here, so that’s why we’re having it at our house
today.” Our roommate Taylor just went over to chat with your husband and we sincerely
apologize for not telling you guys sooner.”
At 4pm, they were issued a noise violation fine.
Obviously, SLO PD realized the impact that this backyard party, unruly & intoxicated gathering
was having on nearby residents and felt the need to hit them with a sizable financial fine.
In addition, I have found this relevant fact out, just today about Greek Permits: The Conditional
Use Permit for the main sorority house only allows 8-10 people for a gathering, and they could
lose their permit if they violate the conditions of their permit. That's probably why they are going
to their 'satellite' houses for parties.
Unfortunately, this is an all-to-common occurrence in my Alta Vista neighborhood. This is the
reason the SLO City needs to help combat the problem of illegal Greek satellite houses. Without
the help of SLO PD, I too would be moving from this once quieter neighborhood.
I am hopeful that the City Council is well-aware of this ongoing problem for non-student
residents. Over the past few years, sadly, I have witnessed many of my professional neighbors
leave their homes due to all the above problems. Alternately, I have chosen to stay in my
beautiful home and enjoy the location and great city of SLO. However, I am still concerned with
this trend. The city seems to be bending a knee towards Cal Poly and all that comes with it.
In the end, neglecting the long-time, local-residents that want to live peacefully with a good
quality of life.
Please help to address the quality of life issues in SLO and illegal Greek Satellite houses.
Sincerely,
Darrell Voss
