Dear ATC members,
After reviewing the ATC staff report for item 4A, I am deeply concerned by the lack of urgency around
improving Safe Routes to School (SRTS). The proposed timeline indicates no meaningful progress until 2027
or later.
This is unacceptable given both the urgency of improving student safety and the availability of $500 million in
state ATP funds (grant applications due 6/22/26). We cannot afford to miss this opportunity.
I would like to direct attention to a couple items from the staff report as background:
At the May 15 ATC meeting, members clearly expressed a desire to expand SRTS efforts. In support
of this, the ATC voted to place SRTS on this agenda.
Staff recommends “explore the current ATP and Draft Vision Zero Action Plan policy and project
recommendations near each school for opportunities”.
To move forward efficiently and position the city to secure state funding, a SRTS committee needs to be
established at this ATC meeting, with the direction to create a prioritized list of SRTS projects to be discussed
at the next ATC meeting in November.
Kind regards,
Helene Finger
