While we all share a commitment to protecting our community from wildfire, this designation places an undue burden on many long-time residents — especially retirees on fixed incomes — who now face sharply increased insurance premiums and potentially costly mitigation requirements. The Cerro neighborhood has a strong record of fire safety. Residents have diligently maintained defensible space, reduced vegetation, and followed city and county guidelines for fire prevention. Moreover, there have been no recent fire incidents in or near our area to justify such a significant reclassification. I respectfully urge the Council to advocate for a reassessment of this designation , or, at minimum, to implement financial assistance or relief programs for affected residents. Without such support, many responsible homeowners could be unfairly penalized despite their proven commitment to safety and community stewardship. Thank you for your attention, leadership, and ongoing dedication to the people of San Luis Obispo. Sincerely, Julia K Starkey 225 Almond St js.fourstar@gmail.com 1 Those we hold closest to our hearts never truly leave us.
