Hello council,
I am writing today on behalf of myself, a newly minted SLO resident. Please see the attached letter.
Thank you,

Hello councilmembers,
As someone who’s now a SLO resident, lives on Grand Ave, and uses this bike lane everyday, I support
the Grand Ave pilot and staff’s recommendation to add additional flex posts at Grand and Loomis. I
personally have observed a lot of illegal turning there from motorists at night. I urge caution about the
proposed restriping of northbound Grand between McCollum and Slack. While I understand the intent
to manage queuing, and have seen it in person, the change could undermine the complete street
design’s safety benefits. With the new restriping, I am afraid that it will induce demand from single-
occupancy vehicles, and we’ll end up with the same congestion and queuing we have now. Converting
that part of Grand into a lane with no protection sends a message and will increase traffic stress for bike
riders that are not confident riding so close to cars.
I know this isn’t being discussed tonight, but looking ahead to 2027, the city should consider having a
bus lane in addition to the existing bike lane. It is unfair for a full bus (see below, recent pictures from
this month) carrying 40-50 passengers to be waiting behind multiple single-occupancy vehicles.
Especially with Cal Poly’s 10-year Future Housing Plan, there will be thousands more students living
on campus that want to go downtown. Fast and frequent buses and better bike infrastructure is the only
way to sustainably and reliably transport these new customers downtown. A bus-priority lane on Grand
would carry far more passengers per lane and help the City meet its climate goals. Think about the
VMT reduction!
Finally, I want to note that on April 24, 2025, the ASI Board of Directors unanimously passed
Endorsement #25-01: San Luis Obispo Transit Short Range Transit Plan, which I was proud to co-
author.1 The endorsement demonstrates strong student support for more frequent and reliable bus
service – something that a bus lane on Grand Ave could be a part of in the future.
Cheers,
Yiming
