HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/28/2025 Item 5a, Anonymous To:E-mail Council Website Subject:10/28/25: Item 5A - Renter Protections Study Session To whom this may concern, I would like to share my story about this matter. If possible, I would like my identity to be kept anonymous. "For the record: Despite being on this Earth for more than 20 years, there's still so much for me to learn. I'm still trying to learn how to cook delicata squash in the oven, figuring out how to use a relascope in my Land & Resource Measurements class at Cal Poly, and many more. Even though I am an adult, I still sometimes feel like a baby bird flying out of the nest for the first time. Until recently, I had no idea what the Tenant Protection Act was or what my rights as a tenant were. Even if I did, I would still feel uncertain about whom to talk to if my rights were threatened. This notion is exactly why I support broader protections for tenants. I know that my inexperience and incompetence with this market create gray lines between me and my landlord. If I don't know what a violation is, how am I supposed to object to violations of my rights? If I didn't know I could reserve my right to pay my rent with a check, what alternative ways could I pay my rent besides what my landlord commands? If my shower never worked when I moved in, which other independent authority could I call to avoid a conflict of interest? I need to know that this city will have my back while I'm juggling my responsibilities as a student at Cal Poly, a data intern for a research project, and so on. Any policy proven necessary, effective, and verifiable is fair game to me. Remember: I don't entirely know what to do when I should. This can only be remedied with the light of knowledge. I deserve to know and to be protected with it." Thanks, and have a great day. Sincerely, 1
