Subject:Public comment for tonight's meeting
Hello,
I am strongly in favor of the city creating a rental registry in order to keep a closer eye on landlords and
the rising cost of rent. Speaking from personal experience, finding housing in SLO as a renter is extremely
stressful, pricy, and it's a total renter's market where you often must take what you can get. I think that
more transparency and oversight from the city can only be a good thing. Landlords have a right to make a
profit, but at the same time, rental housing is not some optional luxury good that we can opt out of, as of
course, owning property here is a non-starter for anyone in the student demographic. I don't see how this
new system would prevent landlords from making a profit, but it could help to reduce price gouging and
rapid rent increases without improvements to justify them.
Sincerely,
Mike Butler
