As you incorporate specific solutions, I hope you’ll consider improving bike/ped safety at the Foothill/Casa intersection. I am a daily commuter to Cal Poly, and this short stretch of Foothill is the scariest part of my trip home (especially this time of year when it’s dark early). To turn left onto Casa, cyclists must merge into the center turn lane and wait while California-bound drivers zip by in the opposite direction. Last year I had several near misses when distracted drivers swerved toward the turn lane. One of those times, the oncoming car came within a few inches of hitting me head-on. After that incident, I changed my route, crossing at California and walking my bike to Casa. It’s a reasonable option for an annoyingly committed rule follower, but it’s certainly not a popular choice. To avoid that left turn, many bike commuters ride on the sidewalk or against traffic in the bike lane. I’d love to see a beacon crosswalk here, but I know that’s cost-prohibitive. Thanks for dedicating some of your brain power to possible solutions.
