Dear Mayor and City Council members,
I am writing today to ask for your discussion/recommendation for the city to submit grant application(s) to fully fund key Tier 1 active transportation projects already underway.
At the November 20, 2025 Active Transportation Committee (ATC) meeting, ATC members requested staff to apply for our share of the $500 million in state active transportation program
(ATP) grant funding - applications are due June 2026. This linked video is ATC member Dave Amos’ summary of the request. Staff responded that the City Council will need to direct that
action.
Last cycle, the City of SLO did not submit any ATP applications. Furthermore, it was announced at the recent ATP webinar, that the state will start awarding mid-cycle funding in 2027….but
only for projects that apply in June 2026.
There is specific urgency around this funding opportunity because the City needs to have time to apply for design and construction of one of our top projects, the Madonna Rd multiuse
trail.
I hope that you will place this item on the next City Council meeting agenda so that discussion and direction can be provided.
Kind regards,
Helene Finger
