Dear City Council,
My name is Alex Musco, founder of the SLO Riders Club that teaches children how to mountain bike. I’ve
spoken at a city council meeting in the past in support of trails so that we can get more kids outdoors on
their mountain bikes.
I am writing today to express my concern that the bike pump tack and skills track included in Bid
Alternate 3 is not being awarded as part of the Righetti Park contract. I know that the city and its
residents have many desires for what is included in this park, and that they are faced with the reality of
budget constraints. I ask that the city strongly re-consider the inclusion of Alternate 3 in the contract as a
skills facility of this nature is an offering currently missing from our city parks, while the other proposed
facilities exist at several other city parks.
Righetti Hill is a crucial area for the SLO Riders Club, where kids can learn to ride on flowy, smooth and
safe trails, which are becoming increasingly rare in SLO’s rocky landscape. A full mountain bike skills
area is something that SLO is missing—Laguna Bike Park is a good skills zone for kids younger than 6 or 7
years old, but there really isn’t anything for kids older than that.
At a minimum, I ask that they city make a commitment to ensuring that any supplemental funds in the
city budget next year be allocated to ensuring the bridge is installed to provide access across the creek
as part of this project to ensure that the bike park can be constructed if funding becomes available in the
future, or through a community effort.
Sincerely,
Alexander Musco
