Dear City Council,
I am writing today to express my concern that the bike pump tack and skills track included in Bid
Alternate 3 is not being awarded as part of the Righetti Park contract. I know that the city and its
residents have many desires for what is included in this park, and that they are faced with the reality of
budget constraints. I ask that the city strongly re-consider the inclusion of Alternate 3 in the contract as a
skills facility of this nature is an offering currently missing from our city parks, while the other proposed
facilities exist at several other city parks.
At a minimum, I ask that they city make a commitment to ensuring that any supplemental funds in the
city budget next year be allocated to ensuring the bridge is installed to provide access across the creek
as part of this project to ensure that the bike park can be constructed if funding becomes available in the
future, or through a community effort.
I have lived in San Luis Obispo my entire life and I am currently going to school at Cal Poly and I have
been immersed in the cycling community for a long time. I have taken advantage of the many open
spaces that the city has created for bike infrastructure and I am so grateful that I get to live in a city that
prioritizes cycling. I have been really impressed with the Righetti Hill projects especially the bike only trail
that fosters skill progression while being fun and safe for all ages. I would have loved to have this in the
neighborhood as a kid growing up and it is awesome to see the next generation of kids having fun riding
bikes. Every time I have been out to ride at Righetti hill, I have seen numerous people enjoying the biking
trails from young children and their families to expert cyclists enjoying the same trails.
I believe that allocating the City's funds to focus on continuing bike infrastructure instead of constructing
pickleball courts will be the best use of money that will have a greater impact on the community. There
are already plenty of places around San Luis Obispo where pickleball players have access to courts and
there is significantly fewer spaces designated for mountain bike skill development. This new bike
infrastructure would provide kids of all ages a safe and fun place to recreate while building fitness,
community and fun.
Thank you for your consideration.
