Subject:Consent Agenda Item 5f - Note from SLO county MTB Olympian
Dear City Council,
My name is Christopher Blevins. I’m a professional mountain biker, Cal Poly grad, and two time
Olympian. I’ve called San Luis Obispo my home for 9 years, and will continue to as I prepare for the 2028
LA Games. I’m writing to express my strong support for including Bid Alternate 3, the bike park and pump
track in the Righetti Park contract.
SLO has a special and underrated cycling community, and I see its potential every single day. A skills
park like this would be a major step forward for local families, young riders, and anyone looking for a
healthy, accessible way to get outside. These kinds of spaces aren’t just recreational; they’re where kids
build confidence, where teams grow, and where the next generation discovers a lifelong passion for
riding. Projects like this also strengthen the bike-friendly culture that already makes SLO such a uniquely
active and connected community.
I understand the reality of budget constraints and the difficult choices involved in planning a community
park. But the bike park fills a real need and offers long-term value that goes far beyond its footprint. It
creates opportunity. It gives young people a place to learn, to play, and to stay active. And it reinforces
the outdoor identity that makes this community so special.
At the very least, I urge the city to commit to funding the bridge that provides access across the creek.
Including it now ensures the bike park remains viable in the future if funding becomes available or if the
community rallies behind it.
Thank you for your time and consideration. This project has the potential to positively shape the next
generation of riders and further strengthen the bike-friendly community that makes SLO such a great
place to call home.
Sincerely,
Christopher Blevins
