Dear City Council,
I am writing to express my concern that the bike pump track and skills track included in Bid Alternate 3 is
not being awarded as part of the Righetti Park contract.
I understand the city faces budget constraints while balancing many community desires for this park.
However, I urge you to reconsider the inclusion of Alternate 3. A skills facility of this nature is an offering
currently missing from our city parks, while other proposed amenities already exist at several locations
throughout the community.
I also want to highlight an opportunity that could make this project more achievable: volunteer build
partnerships. Our area has a deep pool of talented and motivated mountain bikers who would eagerly
contribute their time, skills, and equipment to help construct park features. I speak from direct
experience - I am on the build crew for the Morro Bay Bike Park, where we supply our own equipment and
capabilities in partnership with the City. This cooperative model has proven successful at parks across
the country, including Boise Bike Park, which partnered with local professional riders to create a well-
built facility that serves as a regional draw.
Leveraging volunteer capabilities could allow the city to deliver a quality version of this facility quickly
and affordably, while building community investment in the project's long-term success.
At a minimum, I ask that the city commit to allocating supplemental funds next year to install the bridge
providing access across the creek. This would ensure the bike park can be constructed when funding
becomes available - whether through future budgets or a community-driven effort.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Jed Dawson
