DISCUSSION: The San Luis Obispo Tree Committee has requested that the City designate the California Sycamore as our City tree. The Committee feels that the tree has played a significant role in San Luis Obispo's history. It was on this tree that Father Junipero Serra hung his bell on September 1, 1772 and then conducted the founding mass for our mission. This tree is a proven survivor in the area and is currently used almost exclusively at all bridge crossings within the city due to its ability to thrive under varying conditions. FISCAL IMPACT: None. The sycamore has historical significance because it is the tree from which Father Junipero Serra hung a bell on September 1, 1772 to attract the Chumash Indians and conducted the founding mass for our mission. Many fine specimens of the California Sycamore grow along the creeks of San Luis Obispo. It is a species that appears on the recommended tree list for our city and it has done well when planted in moist areas. If the Council agrees with this request, it would make good publicity for the 1992 Arbor Day celebration. Sincerely, Howard C. Brown, Chairman San Luis Obispo Tree Committee ae atYaw-WP
