Subject:Public Comment in Support of Including the Bike Park & Pump Track at Righetti Park
Dear City Council,
I’m writing to express my strong support for including the bike pump track and skills park proposed in Bid
Alternate Three as part of the Righetti Park contract. I understand there are many competing priorities for
this park and that the City must make difficult decisions within real budget constraints. However, I urge
you to reconsider the exclusion of Alternate Three, as a bike skills facility is something our city currently
lacks, while many of the other proposed amenities already exist in several other parks throughout San
Luis Obispo.
On a personal note, my daughter is becoming increasingly involved with SLO Scorers, and she is eager to
build her confidence and skills on her bike. Right now, we have to leave the area or seek out informal,
less safe spaces for her to practice. A dedicated pump track and skills course at Righetti Park would
provide a much-needed, age-appropriate place for young riders like her—along with many other families
in our community—to learn, practice, and enjoy riding in a controlled and welcoming environment.
At a minimum, I respectfully request that the City commit to installing the bridge across the creek as part
of this project, using any supplemental funds that may become available next year. Constructing the
bridge now ensures that the bike park remains feasible in the future—whether funded through City
resources or through a community-driven effort.
Thank you for your consideration and for your continued work to support recreation, safety, and youth
development in San Luis Obispo.
Sincerely,
Sharon Dowdell
