Dear City Council,
My name is Anders Johnson. I’m a Cal Poly graduate, a longtime San Luis Obispo resident, and a professional
cyclist who recently finished 3rd in the Individual Pursuit at the Track World Championships. I also grew up
racing mountain bikes for years, and that foundation is the reason I’m now competing for a spot at the 2028
Olympic Games.
I’m writing to express my strong support for including Bid Alternate 3—the bike park and pump track—in the
Righetti Park contract.
Facilities like this are where young riders discover the sport, build skills, and gain the confidence that can
shape their entire future. A modern, accessible skills park doesn’t just create better riders—it creates
healthier, more connected communities. It strengthens SLO’s identity as a bike-friendly city and gives kids and
families a safe, fun, low-barrier way to be active outdoors.
I understand the financial considerations involved, but the long-term value of this project far outweighs its
cost. It fills a real need in our recreation system and supports the next generation of cyclists right here on the
Central Coast.
At a minimum, I urge the city to ensure the bridge across the creek is funded now, so the bike park remains
viable when future or community funding becomes available.
Thank you for your time and commitment to building spaces that help this community thrive.
Best,
Anders Johnson
